Early life

Kirtzman was born and raised in Manhattan's Lower East Side. He graduated from Saint Ann's School in 1978. After graduating he went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the Executive Editor of The Daily Pennsylvanian, the student newspaper, and the Sphinx Senior Society and received his B.A.

in journalism from New York University.

Career

In 2013, he joined the administration of then New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg as senior adviser to then School Chancellor Dennis Walcott, overseeing communications and government relations for the nation's largest school district.
